EVDOL 18 - George M. Cohan & Irving Berlin Margaret Hall This course dives deep into the artistic output and influence of two of Broadway’s founding immigrant forefathers: George M. Cohan and Irving Berlin. Both Cohan and Berlin were outsiders to the artistic elite in New York at the turn of the century, but in time, they came to practically write the definition of Americana themselves, from wartime anthems like “Over There” and patriotic odes like “God Bless America,” to full-scale productions glorifying the American Dream that they themselves sought so desperately. Laid out over six sessions, this course is designed for novices and lifelong theater fans alike, illuminating the origins of the American Musical as a genre crafted by immigrant ingenuity.
