Juilliard Extension Division Summer 2026

Composition

Writing and arranging music can be an exciting and rewarding enterprise. Yet the most proficient composers must have the necessary skills in order to effectively carry out their creative impulses, including a knowledge of music theory, an understanding of the various instruments and their capabilities, a solid grasp of compositional principles and techniques, and familiarity with music notation software. These courses cover the broad range of essential compositional skills and techniques. Some courses are designed for those with little to no experience (and it is strongly recommended that these students also register for a course in music theory), while others are for students with established skills who wish to expand their knowledge and strengthen their work. In nearly all courses, students hear their works performed by Juilliard College Division musicians.

Certificate Information

The Certificate in Composition at Juilliard Extension is a comprehensive program designed for aspiring composers. With a minimum of 20 credits, students will delve into various aspects of composition, including foundational courses in composition, advanced composition, orchestration, and advanced orchestration. Additionally, students can choose an elective from subjects like keyboard skills, music production, score reading, orchestral conducting, or scoring to picture, providing them with a well-rounded education in composition.

Applications are currently open for Summer 2026. An online application is required for most summer composition offerings to be considered for placement.

Composition Intensive (Program Selection: Music - Composition) Application deadline: Tues, May 19 @ 5pm ET.

Orchestration Intensive (Program Selection: Music - Orchestration) Application deadline: Mon, May 11 @ 5pm ET.

Composition from Page to Performance - No application is needed for this course. Registration is open to all. Visit the registration page to enroll.
