EVDOL 14 - The Music of Duke Ellington Matthew Rybicki Duke Ellington didn’t just shape jazz—he reshaped American music. Composer, bandleader, pianist, activist, and cultural icon, Ellington was far more than his biggest hits, like “Take the ‘A’ Train” and “Satin Doll.”
In this course, students will explore the trademarks of his musical language (plunger brass effects, unexpected instrumental pairings, and inventive phrase structures) alongside the quirks and bold choices that defined his leadership on and off the bandstand. The course will also consider Ellington’s enduring commitment to reflecting and advocating for the African American experience, and how that mission shaped his work and legacy. Through guided listening, discussion, and lectures, students will gain a deeper understanding of Ellington’s artistry, the musicians who helped bring it to life, and the wider history in which his music lives.
