EVDOL 16 - The Bach Family Derek Wang Mozart famously remarked, “Bach is the father, and we’re the kids.” It’s hard to imagine that any music lover could disagree—except that Mozart wasn’t referring to J.S. Bach (1685–1750), but rather to his second-eldest son, C.P.E. Bach (1714–1788), whose music’s mercurial emotiveness disguises the meticulous training he received from his father. In these two sessions, we will explore the musical practice of the Bach family as a case study in individual artistic formation against a background of tension between tradition and innovation. In addition to introducing selected works of Carl Philipp Emmanuel Bach and Johann Christian Bach (1735–1782), the class will allow us to hear works of J.S. Bach in their familial context, including the Goldberg Variations, The Art of Fugue, and selections from the Notebooks for Anna Magdalena Bach.
