MHMUS 446 — Beethoven in the Age of Napoleon3 credits Fall Fredric Fehleisen
Prerequisite: MHMUS-311. From the moment of his arrival in Vienna in 1792 to the premieres of his Seventh and Eighth Symphonies and Fidelio in 1814, Beethoven’s artistic life was substantially framed by the French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars. During this tumultuous period, he responded with a body of path-breaking musical works that forever redirected the course of musical style. In this course, students will examine works from Beethoven’s Early and Heroic periods within the historical contexts in which they were created.
