THMUS E540 — The Symphonies of Beethoven3 credits

Prerequisite: THMUS 511 . Beethoven’s monumental symphonies are characterized by their deep coherence, profound drama, and bold originality. This course is a comprehensive analysis of Beethoven’s symphonies, exploring through careful study the many ways in which Beethoven forged a new symphonic expression, including his innovations in harmony, melody, form, texture, and rhythm. With respect to the marked individuality of each symphony, our analysis aims to achieve a cumulative understanding of Beethoven’s compositional process.
