THMUS E534 — Time-Benders: Stravinsky, Messiaen, Carter, and Others

Prerequisite: THMUS 511 . Twentieth and 21st-century musical works play with different concepts of time, through unorthodox approaches to rhythm, meter, tempo, and form. This one-semester course explores techniques for analyzing the temporal aspects of works by Igor Stravinsky (The Rite of Spring), Oliver Messiaen (Quartet for the End of Time), Elliott Carter (String Quartets), Terry Riley (In C), Steve Reich (Drumming), and John Adams (Shaker Loops), among others.
