GRMUS H655 — Vienna: Music in Cultural Context, Part II (1890-1939)

2 credits
Spring
Aaron Wunsch

In turn-of-the-century Vienna, music, architecture, and the visual arts converged in a remarkable burst of creative activity. This course will investigate the connections between Vienna’s social, political, and artistic culture and the music of Mahler, Wolf, Schoenberg, Berg, and Webern. Anti-Semitism posed serious challenges for Mahler and Schoenberg, even as a wider culture of Viennese aestheticism encouraged the innovations of many artists and thinkers, including, Klimt, Kandinsky, Schiele, Freud, Loos, and Schnitzler. Multimedia presentations on historical events, social changes, political movements, art, architecture, and concert life will frame the discussion of selected works, and students will research and present works of their choice in cultural context under the guidance of the instructor. Note: Part I is not a prerequisite for this course.
