EVDOL 23 - John Coltrane at 100 (In Person) Nathan See After getting his start in the bands of Thelonious Monk and Miles Davis, saxophonist John Coltrane went on to carve out a career as one of the most influential musicians in modern jazz. In celebration of Coltrane’s centennial on September 13, 2026, this course will take a close look at the man and his music, from the virtuosic and harmonic complexities of ”Giant Steps,” to the spiritual explorations of ”A Love Supreme,” to Coltrane’s sustained interest in Eastern music and religious traditions. Through lectures, guided listening, and discussions, students will gain an appreciation for Coltrane’s artistry, explore his influence on jazz and global music, and develop critical listening skills in a variety of jazz contexts.
