EVDIV 123 - Violin Group Class

Leslie Ashworth
In this class, students explore violin repertoire and performance practice in a studio-style group setting. Designed for students who are ready to move beyond elementary technique provided in Fundamentals of Violin, the course offers an opportunity to develop repertoire in a supportive environment while receiving individualized feedback and coaching. Active listening, discussion, and thoughtful engagement with one another’s playing are essential elements of the class, and students will build both musical skills and confidence through shared work in a small group setting.

Required Materials:

Full-size violin (4/4), full-size bow (4/4), violin rosin, shoulder rest.

Biography: Leslie Ashworth

Optional weekly office hours and coaching sessions with faculty will be available on Wednesdays from 5:30–6:30pm ET via Zoom. Students are encouraged to join these sessions throughout the semester on a voluntary basis.

Prerequisites: Basic music reading skills, including note and rhythmic recognition, as well as sufficient technical foundation on the violin to study repertoire in a group class setting.

Violin Group Class is a permission-only course, with enrollment by invitation from faculty. Students who have not completed the Fundamentals of Violin curriculum but believe they may be prepared for this course should contact extension@juilliard.edu.
