EVDOL 34 - The String Quartet Tradition Mitchell Lyon For more than 250 years, the string quartet has been one of music’s most intimate and inventive forms. From Haydn and Mozart to Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Debussy, Bartók, Shostakovich, and contemporary composers like Caroline Shaw, Thomas Adès, and Jessie Montgomery, composers have returned to the quartet as a place for experimentation, reflection, and deeply personal expression.
Across eight sessions, this course explores how the string quartet has evolved over time and how each generation has redefined its possibilities. Students will hear the quartet as social music, philosophical debate, emotional confession, and artistic laboratory, while tracing the long conversation composers have carried on with one another across centuries. Special attention will be given to Beethoven’s lasting shadow and legacy as we approach the bicentenary of his death.
Biography: Mitchell Lyon
“Mitchel was excellent at presenting a complete picture of the course subject in a personable and engaging style that comes naturally to him. I came away with a better appreciation and understanding of the music and composers presented.” – Juilliard Extension Student, Fall 2025
