EVDOL 26 - The Evolution of Beethoven’s Style

John JH Muller
What shaped Beethoven’s unmistakable musical style? In anticipation of the bicentennial of his death, this course explores how that style emerged through a select group of works from across Beethoven’s career. Students will trace his roots in Classicism and discover how he expanded and transformed inherited forms into music of unprecedented power, drama, and individuality. Along the way, the class will examine Beethoven’s use of form, motive, and harmony, while also considering key biographical context and the reception of his work.

Featured works include the piano sonatas Op. 31, No. 2 (“Tempest”), Op. 53 (“Waldstein”), and Op. 110; the Symphony No. 3 (“Eroica”); the Coriolan Overture; and the String Quartet in C-sharp Minor, Op. 131. Classes will be enhanced with recordings by both period and modern ensembles.
