EVDOL 22 - Beethoven Piano Variations

Mirian Conti
This course explores Beethoven’s remarkable contributions to the piano variation genre. Written between 1799 and 1823, these works reveal his extraordinary ability to transform even the simplest musical idea into music of wit, drama, imagination, and expressive power. The class will examine major sets including the Variations on Original Themes, Op. 34 and Op. 35, the 32 Variations in C Minor, WoO 80, and the monumental Diabelli Variations, Op. 120. Through guided listening and discussion, students will gain a deeper appreciation for the richness and originality of these works and for Beethoven’s enduring brilliance as a composer for the piano.
