EVCRT 423 - Johannes Brahms: Using Analysis and Personal Interpretations to Unveil Symbolism (Online) Patrick Kreeger The loss of some of his closest friends and family members inspired Johannes Brahms to compose deeply spiritual works, including Ein deutsches Requiem, Vier ernste Gesänge, and the Eleven Organ Chorale Preludes. Though considered an agnostic, Brahms turned to genres such as fugue, lieder, and the modest chorale prelude to convey his sentiments during periods of grief and loss. This course uses historical and theoretical analysis to unveil the underlying meaning of these works. Through a careful study of the construction of these works, students will come to understand them as culminating statements of the life of one of the most important 19th-century composers; they will also compose pieces of their own in a similar style, thus internalizing the spiritual quality of Brahms’ compositional process.
