EVDIV 151 - Elements of Composition (In Person or Online) Daniel Felsenfeld, Hilary Purrington Elements of Composition introduces students to the fundamentals of music composition and the core skills needed to write original music intended for live performance. Students will gain familiarity with creative techniques and writing processes, common musical forms, engraving and notation standards, and idiomatic writing for live performers.
Assignments cover a range of approaches and instrumentations, allowing students to experiment freely and develop individual artistic voices. Classes include listening, score study, discussion, and workshop sessions where students can share and refine their music.
By the end of the semester, each student will have written three new pieces for different instrumentations, which are workshopped and brought to life by musicians from the Juilliard College Division. This course requires extensive outside preparation.
