EVDIV 11 - Elements of Music Theory and Analysis (Online)

In this non-credit course, music theory fundamentals will be introduced with the goal of students developing a deeper understanding of the building blocks of music. Students seeking to qualify for Juilliard Extension’s credit-bearing Theory I–V sequence must demonstrate comprehension of these foundational topics through a series of assignments and regular assessments. While letter grades are not recorded on an official transcript for this course, these evaluations and assignments will be used to determine a student’s readiness to advance to Music Theory I and subsequent levels.

Topics include, but are not limited to: notation, symbols, names of notes through fixed-do solfège, clefs, key signatures, major and all three minor scales, modal scales, intervals, triads, and seventh chords as well as an introduction to four-part writing, analysis, and modulation. Students learn to read simple scores and apply basic skills learned in class through discussion and analysis.

This class requires extensive preparation with completion of weekly assignments that are designed to prepare individuals for Juilliard Extension’s credit-bearing music theory curriculum.

Biography: Melanie Williams

Prerequisites: Prior to enrolling in the course Elements of Music Theory, it is highly recommended that students have fluency in at least one clef, either treble or bass. Although students may only be proficient in reading one clef, the ability to pick up the other clef in a reasonable amount of time is desirable. It is important to note that the course is designed for students who have some reading skills and experience with music.
