EVDOL 30 - Opera This Season Scott Eyerly Designed for both newcomers and enthusiasts, this course explores the delights of a great art form from contrasting angles. Operas surveyed in the fall include two new Metropolitan Opera productions, both masterpieces by Bellini: La Sonnambula, acclaimed for its delightful tunes (and sleepwalking soprano), and the composer’s last opera, I Puritani, improbably set during the English Civil War and improbably rich in melody. Additionally, the fall term will survey Arabella, Strauss’ love poem to Vienna, which returns to the Met after a decade; Andrea Chénier, Giordano’s portrait of the love-and-war-torn poet in Revolutionary France; and La fille du régiment, Donizetti’s irresistible comedy starring soprano (and Juilliard alum) Erin Morley in her Met role debut.
After a brief look at the historical background for each opera, attention turns to the score and libretto itself–asking questions like, how does Strauss conjure the atmosphere of 19th century Vienna while maintaining his own compositional style? Enhanced by recorded audio and visual excerpts, this lively course encourages novices and aficionados alike to think differently about opera.
The works surveyed in this course are scheduled for performance in New York, allowing students, outside of class, an opportunity to see the operas being discussed. No prior knowledge of the subject matter is necessary.
