EVDOL 39 - Theater This Season


Margaret Hall
Tailored for both newcomers and seasoned theatergoers, this course invites you to explore the most captivating New York theater of fall 2025, showcasing an exciting blend of new musicals, plays and revivals on and Off-Broadway. Each week, students will study a variety of productions, analyzing their source texts and diving into lively discussions about their history, creators, and cultural impact. Through dynamic lectures, video and audio excerpts, and guest artist appearances, you’ll uncover the deeper layers of each work. Along the way, the course will introduce you to hidden gems of the city—discovering new venues and neighborhoods that enrich your theater-going experience.

  • Viola’s Room 
    • Narrated by Helena Bonham Carter and written by Daisy Johnson, this immersive theatre experience invites the audience to explore a labyrinthine dreamscape where innocence unravels into obsession.
  • Dead Outlaw 
    • Nominated for 7 Tony Awards, Dead Outlaw is a rock n’roll musical journey of redemption, resilience, and Americana storytelling. 
  • Oh Happy Day! 
    • A family BBQ turns into a wildly absurd reckoning with the divine in this outrageous re-imagining of Noah’s Ark from Tony-nominated duo Jordan E. Cooper and Stevie Walker-Webb, featuring original music by Grammy-winner Donald Lawrence. 
  • Maybe Happy Ending
    • Winner of 6 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Maybe Happy Ending is a heartwarming, futuristic musical about two obsolete helper robots who unexpectedly discover love, connection, and humanity.
  • Nothing Can Take You From the Hand of God
    • When a best-selling writer releases a book about her upbringing as a gay kid in the Evangelical South, she is confronted by the woman she claims to have had an affair with — who insists the stories are false.
  • Masquerade
    • Celebrate the Phantom’s return to NYC in this brand new, immersive production. Masquerade will take audiences inside, behind-the-scenes, and closer than ever before to the strange affair of The Phantom of the Opera. 
  • Did You Eat?
    • DID YOU EAT? (밥 먹었니?) is Zoë Kim’s autobiographical journey through love’s many forms–how it’s learned, given, and reflected inward. 
  • Ragtime
    • Tony-winning classic RAGTIME, is an epic, sweeping musical portrait of three families pursuing the American Dream at the dawn of the 20th century.
  • Oratorio for Living Things
    • Creator Heather Christian infuses a classical oratorio with a captivating blend of blues, gospel, jazz, and soul–peeling back complex layers of what it means to be alive on both a human and a cosmic scale.  
  • Hedda Gabler
    • Presented by Juilliard Drama fourth-year students, Rolf Fjelde’s vivid translation of Henrik Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler follows a brilliant but restless newlywed battling boredom and societal confines, manipulating everyone around her in a gripping psychological drama that hurtles toward tragedy.
  • Tartuffe
    • Tony Award nominee Lucas Hnath and Obie Award winner Sarah Benson conspire to bring us a razor-sharp reinvention of Molière’s iconoclastic comedy in a mad-dash production full of ferocious wit, outrageous design, and downright buffoonery.

Additionally, students enrolled in the course will be eligible to receive one complimentary ticket to Juilliard Drama’s production of Hedda Gabler (November 7-10), subject to availability.

Whether you are a seasoned NYC theatergoer or newly inspired to explore the vibrant local scene, this course offers a unique opportunity to experience and understand the magic of contemporary theater. No prior knowledge on the subject matter is necessary.
