EVDOL 14 - Exploring Jazz Traditions Matthew Rybicki Often described as the quintessential American art form, jazz is a complex music genre. It can be challenging for non-musicians to follow an improvised solo or to distinguish the different sounds of jazz. In this course, students will explore influential jazz musicians including Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, and John Coltrane while also learning the essential concepts and vocabulary of jazz. Through frequent use of recording and in-class discussion, students learn to “listen better” and gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of this unique art form. No prior knowledge of the subject matter necessary.
