EVDOL 29 - The Roaring Twenties in New York City

Deborah Bradley-Kramer

Following the flu pandemic of 1918–19, New York City emerged as the epicenter of an artistic renaissance. Celebrated as “The Jazz Age” and “The Era of Wonderful Nonsense,” this decade was marked by astounding changes, and a surge of creative expression in jazz and classical music. Students will examine the pivotal figures of jazz and the impact of the Harlem Renaissance and also delve into the transformation of classical music, exploring innovative compositions and styles that composers developed in response to a rapidly changing society. Set against the backdrop of Tin Pan Alley, the famed music publishing hub on 28th Street, this course will reveal how its sheet music was instrumental in shaping America’s sonic landscape. Students will not only learn about the music, but also gain insights into the social and historical contexts that made the 1920s a truly remarkable decade.
