EVCRT 423 - Music Theory Elective: Advanced Counterpoint (Online) Jordyn Carmen The Western canon finds its origins in species counterpoint, first developed in the Renaissance, expanded in the Baroque, and maintained in the current day. In the core theory curriculum, counterpoint species one through four are briefly discussed, but there is not enough time to uncover the beauty of each species’ nuances, composing both modally and tonally, incorporating the use of dissonance for the first time, developing the independence of line and ultimately fluid counterpoint, which remains central to every composer’s craft. In this course, each species will be explored in depth through analysis and composition, leading to a culminating project of a Prelude and Fugue in the style of J.S. Bach.
