EVDIV 415 - Introduction to Music Technology

This course introduces the compositional and production techniques essential for creating music in today’s evolving sonic landscape. Students will develop creative and technical skills in audio and MIDI sequencing, digital notation, sampling, synthesizer basics, digital sound recording, editing, and processing. Through weekly hands-on exercises, they will explore contemporary approaches to composition and arrangement across various musical genres. Additional topics include synthesizer programming, sound wave identification, the history of music technology, and an introduction to AI in music production. Classes are centered around practical software training and interactive group discussions, with a final project offering students an opportunity to integrate their newly acquired skills with their individual musical interests. This course is taught using Logic Pro, though faculty also have experience with Ableton, Pro Tools, and other digital audio workstations (DAWs).

Biography: Nathan Prillaman

This course offers both credit and non-credit enrollment options. Students registering for credit will complete graded assignments leading to a final letter grade. Passing credit students will earn Juilliard Extension credits, recorded on their transcripts and applicable toward certificate requirements.

Pre-requisite: Basic proficiency with MacOS is required.
