EVDIV 234 - English Diction and Repertoire Donna Gill Embark on a captivating musical journey as we delve into the rich world of English repertoire, ranging from art song composers such as Finzi, Vaughan Williams, Hoiby and Barber to operatic composers such as Carlisle Floyd and Douglas Moore to the rich variety of Musical Theatre repertoire. In this course, we explore a vast spectrum of English music, beginning with early English songs and continuing to trace its development through to the present day. Through this immersive experience, students will acquire essential skills in English phonetics (IPA) and witness how they come to life in the genre of English repertoire that resonates with you.
Our classes are structured to provide a comprehensive understanding of the phonetic structure of the English language as it applies to our chosen songs and arias. The first part of each class is dedicated to exploring the intricacies of English pronunciation, equipping each student with a solid foundation in vocalizing English texts. By mastering these skills, students will gain confidence in interpreting and conveying the true essence of the English language in your performances.
The second part of each class will be an interactive masterclass-style open coaching session. This format allows ample time for each student to work on their selected songs and arias, with valuable feedback and constructive commentary provided by both peers and instructors. Through this collaborative approach, you will refine your vocal technique, interpretation, and artistic expression, elevating your musical abilities to new heights.
As the semester progresses, you will witness your growth and artistic development culminate in a class recital. This final performance, held during our last week of class, will be open to guests of students.
