EVCRT 213 - Advanced Orchestration (In Person or Online)

Derek Weagle
Advanced Orchestrations builds on the foundational skills acquired in the introductory level Orchestration class. This course focuses on orchestration in the context of larger and heterogenous ensembles. In addition to regular lectures, demonstrations, and guest speakers, students examine a diverse cross-section of repertoire from orchestral, wind, chamber, vocal, and keyboard literature to compile a palette of established orchestration techniques. The fall semester includes closer study of the organ, the harp, the guitar, and solo multi-percussion setups, with readings of a work for solo harp, and another for two percussionists and a wind instrument. In the spring semester, students do a deep dive on approaches to orchestration by era and style, as well as an investigation into advanced orchestration and acoustical skills including compound timbres, extended techniques, aleatory, and graphic notation.

The course culminates in the Spring with students composing an original composition for a mid-sized, mixed ensemble which will be workshopped, read, and recorded by students from the Juilliard College Division. Students will receive multiple one-on-one consultations with the instructor who will prepare and conduct their piece, as well as an intensive look at the inner workings of a music library and how to create professional materials of their own. Familiarity with professional music notation software, such as Sibelius, Dorico, or Finale is required for this course.

The exact instrumentation of the final reading is subject to modification at the discretion of the instructor and the Juilliard Extension Division.
