EVCRT 462 - Orchestral Conducting (In Person or Online) Mark Shapiro Effective conductors need versatile skills adaptable to any setting. This course is designed for conductors, composers, instrumentalists, and singers with prior training and experience in conducting. Students explore aspects of orchestral conducting including score study and preparation, approaches to rehearsal and performance, knowledge of instrument groups and musical styles, and specificity and grace with or without a baton. The course emphasizes spontaneous, flexible problem-solving to achieve fluent communication with musicians for a maximally artistic result. Orchestral Conducting (in person) each semester includes sessions with live musicians in both small and large ensembles. Orchestral Conducting (online) will not include these ensembles as part of their class.
This is a yearlong course. Students may join in either fall or spring; however, spring placements are contingent on midyear vacancies. Placement application required unless pre-approved to enroll.
