LARTS 398 — Postcolonial Aesthetics

3 credits
Spring
Sheetal Majithia

Postcolonial Studies refer(s) to the interdisciplinary study of European empires and colonization which directly impacted 85% of the world. What kinds of political, economic, ethical, and cultural legacies did these encounters leave in their wake? Using the framework of postcolonial aesthetics, this course asks how cinema, art, fiction, and theory by and about Fanon, Said, Spivak, Pontecorvo, Sembene and others reimagine domination, resistance, nation, citizenship, and justice. How did influence travel between so-called metropoles and peripheries in Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Africa? We ask, finally, how such comparisons renew and reinvent aesthetics at large.
