LARTS 337 — Special Topics in American Literature: James Baldwin

3 credits
Spring
Renée Baron

Prerequisite: LARTS 112 James Baldwin (1924-87) is considered one of the greatest 20th century American writers. His masterful prose – as evidenced in his prolific essays, plays, short stories, and novels – spoke to his historical context and was prescient for our contemporary moment. Specifically, his work anticipates many of today’s discussions about race, sexuality, art, and national identity.  In this course, we will read a variety of Baldwin’s work and consider his life, artistry, and legacy.  Texts may include “Everybody’s Protest Novel,” Giovanni’s Room, The Amen Corner, and Another Country.
