MHMUS 419 — Music in the Age of Handel

Prerequisite: MHMUS 311 . In this course, students will explore particular works of George Frideric Handel and his contemporaries within the artistic and cultural contexts in which they first appeared. The works studied will feature Handel’s music for the British crown, Chapel Royal, theatrical entertainments, and the general public, including the Coronation Anthems, Messiah, Ariodante, Musick for the Royal Fireworks, Alexander’s Feast, and the Grand Concertos, as well as several significant works by Handel’s European contemporaries.
