. The two polar opposites of 19th-century German music: The Neo-Classical works of Brahms, built upon the grand traditions of classical forms, structure, and aesthetic, combined with the evolving chromatic harmonies is a culmination of the history of classical concert music up until that time. It paved the way for future generations of Neo-Classicists, who both honored and explored the music of the past, and who were inspired to find ways to make the music current and fresh. Wagner’s conscious exploration of revolutionary approaches to harmony and structure, totally altering the structures of traditional Classical and early 19th-century operas, also broke ground for future generations to exult in exploration and change. The influential and fascinating approaches of Brahms and Wagner inspired future generations of composers to explore these two contrasting paths. Great works by both composers will be examined and compared.
