LARTS 372 — Science Fiction and Fantasy Literature

Prerequisite: LARTS 112 . Science fiction and fantasy literature have experienced an unprecedented surge in popularity in the last quarter-century. Once relegated to the lower realms of “genre,” they now influence contemporary culture in profound ways. In this course, we will examine the history, form, and function of these narrative modes in literature, film, television, graphic novels, games, and digital media. Emphasis will be placed on learning to “world-build,” that is, how to study past works in order to create other worlds in art.
