A basic introduction to the qualities and capabilities of orchestral instruments. Students analyze representative solo, chamber, and orchestral works, with an emphasis on core repertoire and the historical development of the orchestra. Written exercises are read in class by various small ensembles. Offered in alternate years. Required of all undergraduate Composition majors.
