Graduate Diploma

The Graduate Diploma program is for highly gifted musicians who wish to pursue musical studies beyond the undergraduate level but do not wish to enter the full Master of Music degree program. An undergraduate degree or diploma is required for admission.

NOTE: Important statistics and disclosure information on all non-degree diploma programs are available on the Juilliard Web site.

Curriculum

It is expected that all requirements for the Graduate Diploma will be completed within one year, except for majors in Collaborative Piano, Conducting, Guitar, Historical Performance, and Voice, which have approved two-year residencies (see below). The performance requirement, depending on the major field of study, includes such activities as orchestra, repertory classes, chamber music, or opera studies. Students must demonstrate, by means of placement examinations, proficiency in theory and analysis and ear training.* The minimum 26 total credits required are distributed by semester generally as follows:

  Credits
Major Study 6/6
Departmental Requirement of Practicum 2/2
Performance Requirement 4/4
Departmental Seminar 0/0
Recital/Graduation Jury -/2

*Required study in ear training does not satisfy credit requirements for the Graduate Diploma.

Two-Year Approved Residencies

A two-year residency is approved for majors in Collaborative Piano, Conducting, Guitar, Historical Performance, and Voice, in order to allow sufficient time for the development of advanced techniques and repertoire. Students in two-year programs must complete a minimum total of 50 credits over four semesters.
