Faculty
One of America’s most prestigious programs for educating singers, the Ellen and James S. Marcus Institute for Vocal Arts provides comprehensive training and performance opportunities for singers at all levels of development, with an equal focus on opera and song literature performance.
The Marcus Institute is a place for singers to develop their full potential as artists. From the time singers arrive in their first year of undergraduate study they are invited to coach with members of an unparalleled coaching staff and faculty who work regularly at the Metropolitan Opera and other leading companies throughout the world. Voice students at all levels participate in opera, recital, and early-music programs, enjoying the opportunity to work with world-renowned musicians and conductors such as Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Alan Gilbert, James Conlon, William Christie, Speranza Scappucci, and Emmanuel Villaume.
The small size of the program enables the School to offer an individualized course of study to each student. While students in each program share a core curriculum, much of their studies are tailored to their individual educational and artistic priorities, allowing them to progress at their own pace. For those students ready to enter the professional world, Juilliard offers unique exposure to the music industry through widely reviewed productions, auditions with management and the world’s leading opera companies, as well as close association with the Metropolitan Opera and the New York Philharmonic.
Juilliard graduates may be heard in opera houses and concert halls throughout the world; diverse alumni artists include well-known performers such as Leontyne Price, Renée Fleming, Risë Stevens, Tatiana Troyanos, and Shirley Verrett. Recent alumni include Isabel Leonard, Susanna Phillips, Paul Appleby, Julia Bullock, Erin Morley, Sasha Cooke, and Golda Schultz.
Juilliard offers a Bachelor of Music degree and a Diploma for undergraduate voice students; and a Master of Music degree, Graduate Diploma , Doctor of Musical Arts , and Artist Diploma in Opera Studies for graduate-level students. Click below to learn more:
