Faculty
Jazz Studies offers a Bachelor of Music degree and a Diploma for undergraduate students; a Master of Music degree, Graduate Diploma , and Artist Diploma for graduate-level students. All are pre-professional performance-based programs focusing on public performance for jazz orchestra and small ensemble. In addition to performances at Juilliard and Alice Tully Hall, the orchestra and small ensembles perform in New York City jazz clubs and on tour. Performances include collaborations with students from the Dance Division as well as with the Juilliard Orchestra. In addition to private lessons, the principal departmental studies include jazz history, improvisation, and composition and arranging. Individual students may also be required to enroll for jazz piano, ear training, and/or Music Theory and Analysis as advised. Jazz artists will be evaluated throughout their studies. The progress of each undergraduate student will be reviewed at the close of the second year by the faculty and administration of Jazz Studies to determine the suitability of continuing participation in the program for a third year. Graduate-level students will be reviewed at the close of the first year to determine the suitability of continuing for the second year.
NOTE: Important statistics and disclosure information on all non-degree diploma programs are available on the Juilliard Web site.
