    Music StudiesOrchestras and Ensembles

Performances of standard and contemporary orchestral and operatic repertoire are conducted world-renowned guest conductors. David Robertson, director of conducting studies and distinguished visiting faculty, oversees the orchestral conducting program at The Juilliard School. In addition to regularly scheduled public concerts in Carnegie Hall, David Geffen Hall, Alice Tully Hall, and the Peter Jay Sharp Theater, the orchestras and ensembles engage in other professional activities including national and international tours, and other special events.

    Chamber Music Ensembles

Members of Juilliard’s two resident ensembles — the Juilliard String Quartet and the American Brass Quintet — are joined by other chamber music faculty to provide coaching to more than 100 chamber music groups. A semester’s work leads to a public performance by each student ensemble, in one of a variety of venues. Students may also participate in ChamberFest, an intensive chamber music concentration during the second week of January (the final week of the winter recess), with daily coachings and unlimited rehearsal time, and performances the following week. For more details, please visit chamber music on the Juilliard website.

    Repertory Classes

Repertory classes meet a minimum of six to eight times per semester with a member of the faculty to increase familiarity with standard orchestral works. Some sections cover solo repertory as well as skills and techniques related to the specific department. Mock auditions and special guests from the world’s visiting orchestras are also included in these activities.
