LARTS 332 — Writing Short Fiction

3 credits
Fall
Robert Lynn

Prerequisie: LARTS 112  Designed to help students explore broad possibilities in writing and find their voice on the page, this course will focus on generating short fiction and honing it at multiple levels—sentence, paragraph, image, character and plot among others. In addition to their own writing, students will read short stories, flash fiction, and novel excerpts by writers from a wide array of literary and cultural traditions and apply craft lessons from these in their own work. The semester comprises writing exercises, workshop critiques, and discussions of related issues. Students will develop writing and editorial skills, the emphasis being on how to use those tools to explore fictional possibilities and vividly relate interior experiences.
