EVDOL 39 - Theater This Season

Tailored for both newcomers and seasoned theatergoers, this course invites you to explore the most captivating New York theater of spring 2026, showcasing an exciting blend of new plays, musicals and revivals on and Off-Broadway. Each week, you’ll engage with a variety of productions, analyzing their source texts and diving into lively discussions about their history, creators, and cultural impact. Through dynamic lectures, video and audio excerpts, and guest artist appearances, you’ll uncover the deeper layers of each work. Along the way, the course will introduce you to hidden gems of the city—discovering new venues and neighborhoods that enrich your theater-going experience.

Featured Productions

Please note that the following productions and teaching schedule are subject to adjustments at the faculty’s discretion.

Marjorie Prime
- A heart-achingly beautiful rumination on aging and artificial intelligence, memory and mortality, love and legacy, Marjorie Prime examines the blurred line between a life lived and a life remembered.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream
- A fresh retelling of Shakespeare’s classic comedy of magic and mayhem, presented by Juilliard Drama’s fourth-year students, Group 55.
The Unknown
- Emmy and Tony Award–winning actor Sean Hayes of Good Night, Oscar stars as Elliott in The Unknown. A gripping new play about a writer on the edge.
The Reservoir
- Josh’s life is a mess. He’s moved home to Denver to get sober, but after years of drinking, the fog in his brain won’t lift. Struggling with memory loss, confusion, and shame he finds himself strangely in step with his four aging grandparents. The Reservoir is a funny, human play about memory, recovery, and the joys of cross-generational connection.
Cold War Choir Practice
- In this celebrated play directed by Tony Award nominee Knud Adams (ENGLISH), a young girl is embroiled in intrigue when her estranged uncle, a prominent Black conservative, brings his mysteriously ill wife home for the holidays.
Chinese Republicans
- Shifting between sharp-tongued humor and the harsh realities of modern capitalism, this world premiere production explores themes of assimilation, intergenerational conflict, and gender politics in the workplace—all with unflinching wit and empathy. Chinese Republicans is a new play from a thrilling new American voice, and tells a truly American story.
Giant
- Following an acclaimed West End run and three Olivier Awards, GIANT tells the story of Roald Dahl and the true scandal that shook his legacy. Tony, Golden Globe, and Olivier Award-winner John Lithgow (Conclave, The Crown) reprises his extraordinary, career-defining performance as Roald Dahl.
CATS the Jellicle Ball
- Broadway meets Runway in the fiercest event of the season. Based on T.S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s worldwide phenomenon CATS is reimagined in a production that smashed records, won awards and left New York City purring. And now CATS: The Jellicle Ball ascends to Broadway in a kaleidoscope of glittering spectacle, iconic music and electrifying ballroom choreography
Rocky Horror Show
- The legendary rock-‘n’-roll musical takes on new life as a guaranteed party at the legendary Studio 54, staged by Tony Award-winning Oh, Mary! director Sam Pinkleton.
The Lost Boys
- When a mother and her two teenage sons move to town in desperate need of a fresh start, they soon uncover the darker side of this sunny coastal community. Based on the cult-classic Warner Bros. film, The Lost Boys: A New Musical arrives on Broadway this spring, directed by Tony Award® winner Michael Arden (Maybe Happy Ending, Parade) and featuring music and lyrics by The Rescues.
Proof
- Catherine (Ayo Edebiri), the brilliant but restless daughter of renowned mathematics professor Robert (Don Cheadle), is thrust into turmoil when a notebook containing a revelatory proof is discovered after his death. As debate erupts over its true authorship, Catherine must confront the power of legacy, and the cost of proving herself.

Additionally, students enrolled in the course will be eligible to receive one complimentary ticket to Juilliard Drama’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream (February 19-22, 2026), subject to availability.

Whether you are a seasoned NYC theatergoer or newly inspired to explore the vibrant local scene, this course offers a unique opportunity to experience and understand the magic of contemporary theater. No prior knowledge of the subject matter necessary.
