EVDOL 19 - Debussy’s Piano: The Poetry, Politics, and Popular Culture of Paris Catherine Kautsky Claude Debussy is known for composing music of astonishing beauty, filled with ethereal harmonies and dreamlike soundscapes. Yet beneath this poetic surface lie provocative titles that engage directly with powerful social and political themes still relevant today—colonialism, gender stereotypes, nationalism, and racism. This course invites students to experience Debussy’s music from two intriguing angles: first, through immersive live piano performances highlighting his timeless, evocative melodies; and second, by examining how his carefully chosen titles offer profound commentary on the turbulent society of fin-de-siècle France. Discover how a composer known for his dreamy, otherworldly music also offers insightful commentary on social and political issues.
