This course explores the fascinating evolution of the stage musical to the world of cinema. From the early days of sound film, when movies burst into song and dance, to the inventive hybrids of performance seen in classics like Singin’ in the Rain, the film musical has both delighted and confounded audiences. This class examines everything from the elegantly choreographed routines of Fred Astaire’s films to the bold experimentations of recent productions, including the infamous film adaptation of Cats. This course celebrates the brilliant artistry of these cinematic gems while also dissecting their most baffling missteps.
