EVCRT 411 - Music Theory and Analysis IV: At Tonality’s Edge (Online)

This course examines later 19th- and early 20th-century trends that contributed to the breakdown of traditional tonality around 1900 and the ensuing rise of new tonalities. An ongoing theme in this course is developing a working definition of tonality and the tension between harmonic and contrapuntal aspects of music.

Biography: Patrick Kreeger

Pre-requisites: Music Theory and Analysis III (or equivalent) is recommended but not required. Applicants should have knowledge of the following concepts: first- and second-level analysis; chromaticism including applied chords, mixture, Neapolitan chord, augmented sixth chords, and chromatic chords arising from extended tonicizations; figured bass symbols, with particular focus on chromatic notation. (i.e. flat sign below a Roman numeral vs. flat sign to the left of a Roman numeral); chromatic modulation; sonata form.
