EVDOL 32 - The Burt Bacharach & Hal David Songbook Edward Barnes The team of Bacharach and David—one of the most successful songwriting teams in American popular music—was a key player in defining the sound of the 1960s. The creators of many iconic hits including “I Say a Little Prayer,” “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head,” and “What the World Needs Now is Love,” Bacharach and David also wrote songs for movies including What’s New Pussycat, Alfie, and The Look of Love as well as the score to the Broadway musical Promises, Promises. This three-session course explores the lives and careers of this accomplished duo, from their first meeting in 1956 and work at the Brill Building in NYC through their rise to fame in the 1960s and eventual breakup in the early 1970s. Included is a look at their collaborative process, the stars they worked with (including Dionne Warwick, Tom Jones, and Dusty Springfield), their business dealings, and the musical, lyric, and performance elements that gave their songs such a distinctive and unique style.
