EVDOL 28 - Sondheim’s A Little Night Music Art Williford Debuting on Broadway in 1973, A Little Night Music, an enchanting operetta inspired by the classic Viennese traditions of Léhar and Strauss, revealed an unexpected side of Stephen Sondheim. Impossibly charming and wistful, the show stood in contrast to the biting irony and emotional darkness of Company and Follies, yet it retained Sondheim’s signature depth. Behind the elegant waltzes lies a richly textured emotional landscape, blending romance, wit, and complexity. This course delves into the intricate craftsmanship of this musical, uncovering how its delicate music and lyrics elevate a tale of love, longing, and redemption into a timeless masterpiece in 3/4 time.
