EVDIV 68 - Summer Acting Intensive Mark Olsen, Claire Karpen, Brian McManamon Join Juilliard Extension’s Summer Acting Intensive, a transformative four-day program designed for actors eager to deepen their craft through movement, character development, and text-based exploration. Led by Juilliard Extension faculty members Mark Olsen, Claire Karpen, and Brian McManamon, this immersive experience refines acting techniques, expands creative instincts, and enhances performance skills in a rigorous yet supportive environment.
Participants will train within three structured cohorts, ensuring a well-rounded and collaborative learning experience. Each day, students will rotate among faculty members, engaging in a curriculum designed to integrate distinct but complementary methodologies. Beyond the core training, students will gain exclusive industry insights through guest speaker sessions and Q&As with professionals, providing valuable perspectives on career development and the evolving landscape of the performing arts. The program also includes structured networking opportunities, allowing participants to connect with peers, faculty, and industry leaders.
Cohort Structure
• Three cohorts of at least 10 students each
• Students remain in their assigned cohort throughout the program
• Each faculty member teaches all cohorts daily

• 10am–noon | Session 1
• Noon–12:15pm | Break

Curriculum Overview
Physical Acting with Mark Olsen
Develop a deeper understanding of physical expression, kinetic impulse communication, and gestural language. This session refines movement-based acting for both stage and screen, incorporating techniques for comic timing, body awareness, and ensemble partnering.
Text & Performance: From Script to Stage with Claire Karpen
Strengthen scene study, audition technique, and performance readiness through a deep exploration of text analysis. This session focuses on active listening, strong character choices, and practical strategies for interpreting scripts, equipping actors with essential tools for success in both performance and industry settings.
Embodying a Role: A Deep Dive into Character Transformation with Brian McManamon
Through an interview-based approach, actors will explore character embodiment with nuance and authenticity. Using a blend of voice, movement, and ensemble exercises, students will cultivate a richer, more dynamic connection to their roles and expand their storytelling capabilities.
Additional Experiences
Welcome Reception: Join us on Tuesday, June 17, from 5 to 6:30pm, for wine and light hors d’oeuvres, and an opportunity to meet faculty and fellow participants in an informal setting.
Industry Insights: Gain valuable knowledge from guest speakers on Friday, June 20, from 5 to 6:30pm, and engage in Q&A sessions with industry professionals, offering guidance on navigating the acting profession.

All classes are held in-person at Juilliard. Participants are responsible for housing and transportation.
