EVDIV 11 - Elements of Music Theory and Analysis

In this course, students learn the elements of music and prepare the foundation for materials discussed in later Music Theory classes. These include notation, symbols, names of notes through fixed-do solfège, clefs, key signatures, major and all three minor scales, modal scales, intervals, triads, and seventh chords as well as an introduction to four-part writing, analysis, and modulation. Students are introduced to the reading of simple scores and apply basic skills learned in class through discussion and analysis. This class requires extensive outside preparation in the completion of weekly assignments in order for students to master the skills necessary to continue in the Music Theory and Analysis sequence.

Biography: Melanie Williams

Pre-requisite: Prior to enrolling in the course Elements of Music Theory, it is highly recommended that students have fluency in at least one clef, either treble or bass. Although students may only be proficient in reading one clef, the ability to pick up the other clef in a reasonable amount of time is desirable. It is important to note that the course is designed for students who have some reading skills and experience with music.
