LARTS 397 — Cultural History of the Atomic Age3 credits Spring Dan Ewert
Prerequisite: LARTS 112 . In 2026, scientists worldwide are rushing to develop artificial intelligence, a technology whose full impact on humanity is still impossible to predict and which could either lead to a new era of peace and prosperity or economic and social catastrophe. It may be tempting to believe this is a development like no other in human history. But is it really? This elective begins by exploring the history of the atomic age (1945-present), a time when nuclear technology profoundly transformed life around the world. Our discussions will mostly focus on how art and culture grappled with this paradigm shift by examining primary sources and works of science fiction, satirical and documentary films, music, design, and visual art that sought to capture the magnitude of this potentially world-destroying technology. Toward the end of the course, we will use this foundation to consider how our culture is grappling with the potential consequences of artificial intelligence and other profound technological changes today. No prior knowledge about technology or global history is required.
