LARTS 333 — Art Out of the Box: The Artist and Society

3 credits
Fall
Desirée Alvarez

Prerequisite: LARTS 112 . What role does the artist play in society? We examine the current moment of visual art making in historical context. We explore a range of strategies including performance art, painting, sculpture, collage, video, and installation art. With films of artists and readings in aesthetics, poetry, literature and critical theory, our investigation seeks to fashion a vocabulary for evaluating and creating art that responds to the human condition and our moment. With writing, praxis, and projects we consider the theoretical practice of artists and study artist manifestos, theories of art, aesthetic theory, and art criticism. We will examine such major concepts and movements as figuration, abstraction, Earth Art, feminist art, art and technology, conceptual art, political art, and portraiture.
