LARTS 271 — French Conversation through Cinema

Prerequisite: LARTS 172 . The goal of this class is twofold: to improve self-expression in French and to provide a better understanding of French and Francophone life, language, and culture. Outstanding French films, subtitled in English, will be used as springboards for classroom French-language discussion and for instruction in the full range of language proficiencies - reading, listening, speaking and writing - in an array of contexts and situations. French grammar will be systematically reviewed throughout the year, and written exercises will be assigned to strengthen the use of the language. The vocabulary exercises that accompany each film will provide the necessary resources to discuss the films in class, to make short in-class oral presentations, and to write short essays.
