EVDIV 14 - Jazz Theory & Analysis II Sean Smither This course is intended for students with previous experience in jazz theory, performance, composition, and/or arranging. Students will study the relationship between melody and harmony, providing a foundation for the analysis of jazz solos and the practice of jazz improvisation and composition. Students will also explore polyrhythms and crossrhythms as well as the relationship between melody and groove, including swing and Afro-Caribbean grooves. By the end of this course, students will have an expanded toolset that they can apply to their own work in improvisation, composition, and arranging. Applicants should be able to read and write in Western music notation and should be familiar with basic intervals, major and minor scales, triads, seventh chords, and Roman numerals.
