EVDOL 35 - Comparing the Musical Styles of Debussy and Ravel

Dive into the captivating universe of Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy, two titans of music whose works are often studied together yet reflect distinct artistic identities. This course offers a deep dive into the personal and musical interplay between these composers, exploring how their early influences on each other diverged into uniquely individual styles.

Participants will explore key works including their string quartets—highlighting how Ravel’s quartet was directly inspired by Debussy’s groundbreaking composition. The course also examines their piano masterpieces, such as Ravel’s “Jeux d’eau” and Debussy’s “Jardins sous la pluie,” to illustrate how these pieces set new standards in musical expression. Additionally, a comparative analysis of songs where both composers set the same Mallarmé poems to music will provide insight into their differing approaches to text setting.

The journey culminates in an in-depth study of their orchestral works, now staples of the classical repertoire, showcasing each composer’s unique musical personality. Through expert-led discussions, listening sessions, and interactive analysis, students will gain a nuanced understanding of how Ravel and Debussy shaped the direction of modern music.
