EVDOL 34 - Cello Concertos: The Cello’s Voice From Baroque to Modernity Mitch Lyon This course offers an immersive journey into the history of the cello concerto, from Vivaldi’s Baroque gems to the complexities of modern repertoire. We will explore the evolution of the genre, highlighting how it has mirrored changes in the classical music landscape while showcasing the cello’s distinctive voice. Students will engage with seminal works by composers including Haydn, Dvořák, Elgar, and Shostakovich as we discover the magic behind these creations that have enthralled audience members and cellists alike. Discussions will focus on the stories behind each concerto as well as musical analysis, the development of cello technique, and the impact of historical and contemporary cellists on these masterpieces, with a blend of lectures, discussions, and listening sessions, including live performance.
The ability to read music is recommended but not mandatory.
